2021.12.09 04:11 valimence I had an idea for a new machine...

It would be cool if there was a water wheel or some kind of water collection machine along the river that you could unlock the same way the mine and town work. You could get buckets of water, cups of water, etc. Some recipes irl require you to add water so that could be one of the uses for it.

2021.12.09 04:11 Tazling Easily underrated, but good fun: Epic Roller Coasters

TLDR: Yeah, yeah, roller coasters... yawnworthy right? Actually, Epic Roller Coasters is more fun than I remembered from just playing the demo. After enjoying several of their roller coasters I'm beginning to think there's an under-explored VR market niche here.
---
There are now quite a number of fun, toony layouts and three playing modes in EpicRC. The basic mode (Classic) is just what you'd expect: you're riding on a roller coaster -- vertigo and the thrill of speed in VR. But in the second mode, you're driving the roller coaster and have to get the speed right so you don't derail on curves etc. In the third mode, you get to do some target shooting!
The aesthetic is toony and a little odd -- the "Magical Forest" ride f'rexample includes some strange creatures that I don't recognise from any of the myths or folktales familiar to me! The devs have done some good work with atmospheric perspective and ambient sound to make jungle/forest locations quite appealing. Water fx are pretty crude, but this is closer to Walkabout Mini Golf than it is to Skyrim, so... Immersion varies a lot from layout to layout as does model quality, but most are amusing -- and contain enough visual detail and animations to make multiple viewings rewarding. Underground sequences are particularly pleasing to my eye -- rock textures are pretty good, at least at roller-coaster speeds :-)
What I hadn't really considered about a "moving train" ride like this is how well it shows off VR. There's nothing like a continuously moving POV plus the ability to look around, to create a very strong sense of 3D. Combine this with occasional serious heights (some of the taller roller coasters make me a bit giddy on the first big down slope) and you have a pretty good demo of "why VR is cool". Some of the rides are easy enough on your VR legs that they could be used to show off your headset to n00b friends and family members. Others, not so much.
I'm thinking there may be a niche here for "experiences" (not really games) where you ride on a train (or boat or balloon or whatever) through interesting landscapes full of visual details. Very relaxing; IRL people pay a lot for these types of "rides". This is super casual VR -- rides last between 2 and 6 minutes so you can pick up your HMD and ride a couple of roller coasters while waiting for dinner to cook.
It's a very different experience of course from the flagship apps like a large-scale immersive game with puzzles, a really comprehensive sim, or a physically demanding workout game. Some would no doubt sneer a bit because it's so passive and simple -- but I think there may be a market niche for this type of semi-passive experience, and a living to be made creating them. It emulates the Disneyland rides and fairground/funhouse rides that many of us are familiar with, evoking some good childhood memories. (Their "snowy mountains" ride reminds me a whole lot of the thrill of the Matterhorn at Disneyland when I was a kid.)
Basically it's a 3d movie experience, but with a moving platform to view from. Epic Roller Coaster has created some attractive, if not photorealistic, environments to travel through. I could easily imagine people paying $15-20 for a game that offered, say, a simulated Everglades tour, a Serengeti safari tour, a cruise among icebergs etc. The more photoreal the modelling, the more users would pay (or so I imagine).
Like Walkabout and Real Fishing, EpicRC has won me over more than I ever expected it to. Has anyone else got strangely fond of it?

2021.12.09 04:11 kkaitlynma 19F Looking for a friend to talk about and play games with

My boyfriend is usually at school/work most of the day so I thought it would be nice to find someone to hangout with when he is gone.
I mostly play on PS5, but I also have switch and PC. My favorite games are The Last of Us, Bloodborne, Hollow Knight, Terraria, and so on. In terms of online/multiplayer games I play a lot of Apex, Genshin, and I am wanting to start Warframe. It would be awesome to find someone who could show me around the game.
I don't have too many other hobbies but I'm down to talk about anything. I don't wanna share too much about me so that I can have stuff to talk about. If you're interested in hanging out just send me a msg and tell me a little bit about yourself. I look forward to meeting some cool people :)

2021.12.09 04:11 Open-Lettuce-4163 Entertaining the Thought of Building a Floor Loom

I have thought about building a floor loom for years. I have plenty of space, and plenty of loom building plans. The space I'm putting the loom is about 10' x 18' so more than enough space. I may also build a continuous warp stand (creel), and other weaving related equipment, in the future.
The loom plan I decided on is the plan from the Loom Book. It has a small footprint: about 43" x 50". The weaving width is about 45", and it has a low castle. My hand built loom may be a four harness loom, though I may want to expand it to 8 harnesses and 10 treadles. I only want to produce fabric yardage in my original tartan designs.
As for learning to weave, there is a weaver's guild south of Palomar, CA. They are not holding weaving classes at the moment because of Covid-19.
Here is a list of loom building information I have found over the years . . .
